Belarusian Energy Minister Vladimir Potupchik met with Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein, Governor of the State of Khartum, Sudan on 1 November. Vladimir Potupchik is a co-chairman of the Belarusian-Sudanese intergovernmental cooperation commission. Representatives of Beltopgaz, Belenergo, Bellegprom, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present during the meeting. The sides discussed the current state, development prospects and possible ways of invigorating Belarusian-Sudanese cooperation in power engineering, manufacturing, agriculture, and other spheres.

The negotiations confirmed Sudan’s interest in comprehensive cooperation with Belarus in the production sector, civil engineering, agriculture, the organization of shipments of Belarusian tractors, automobiles, agricultural machines, and road construction machines. Belarus’ participation in petrochemical and energy projects, the training of Sudanese specialists in Belarus were discussed. It was noted that Sudan is not just a promising partner for Belarus. Sudan is now considered kind of a springboard for promoting Belarusian goods to Africa.

The sides discussed the schedule of near-future Belarusian-Sudanese events and visits. Vladimir Potupchik invited Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein to take part in the fourth session of the Belarusian-Sudanese cooperation commission in Khartoum in January 2018. The invitation was accepted. In turn, the Khartoum State governor invited representatives of Energy Ministry enterprises to take part in the Khartoum international industrial expo in February 2018.

The visit of the Sudanese delegation is expected to open a new page in Belarus-Sudan cooperation. In addition to laying down the groundwork for direct ties between the metropolitan areas of the two countries the visit will have a positive effect on Belarus-Sudan cooperation as a whole.

The Sudanese delegation is in Belarus on 30 October – 4 November thanks to the agreements reached during the visit of the Belarusian delegation led by President Alexander Lukashenko to Sudan in January 2017.
