Round timber sales via BUCE 23% up in January-October

MINSK, 9 November (BelTA) – Over ten million cubic meters of round timber worth Br731 million was sold via the Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE) in January-October 2020, which was up by 2% in physical terms and by 23% in monetary terms year-on-year, BUCE Press Secretary Roman Yaniv told BelTA.
“The growing demand for round timber from Belarusian woodworking enterprises is one of this year’s main tendencies. The most popular products are pulpwood, sawlogs, and technological raw wood. They account for about 80% of all exchange transactions in the domestic market,” Roman Yaniv said.
The yearly trading session in timber harvested in 2021 will be held at the BUCE on 19-20 November. The exchange is taking measures to provide sufficient supply of timber and give access to the trading session to large, medium-sized, and small enterprises alike. The exchange has already received purchase bids for over four million cubic meters of round timber.
“The previous yearly trading session showed that waiving special eligibility rules for purchasers leads to a more effective allocation of wood resources. We will do the same this year. The special eligibility rules will apply only to some types of products, for example, veneer logs of soft-wooded broadleaved species, spruce wood, and sawlogs of hard-wooded broad-leaved species. Moreover, in order to satisfy the increased demand from Belarusian woodworking companies, the exchange aims to attract supplies from Russia. Several companies from Russian regions bordering Belarus have already been accredited at the exchange,” Roman Yaniv noted.
The Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange was set up in 2004. It conducted its first auctions in June 2005. The BUCE is one of the largest commodity exchanges in Eastern Europe. Its main function is to assist Belarusian enterprises with exporting products and foreign companies with entering the Belarusian market. BUCE sells a wide range of metal, forestry, and agricultural products, industrial and consumer goods.
