PM: Belarus expects a better harvest this year

MINSK, 5 July (BelTA) – This year’s harvest is expected to be higher than last year’s, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at a meeting to discuss the state of things in the agricultural sector, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian president set a task to increase the agricultural output by at least 6-7% over last year, the head of government recalled. “For this, agricultural organizations should get at least 9.9 million tonnes of grain in bunker weight [the weight of grain as it comes from combines], and more than 1 million tonnes of rapeseed. It is necessary to increase the output of sugar beets to 5.2 million tonnes, potatoes to 1.1 million tonnes, vegetables to 600,000 tonnes. These tasks have been communicated to the regions,” he noted.

The crops on the fields look pretty robust. “The harvest is expected to be higher than last year’s,” Roman Golovchenko emphasized. “The most important task is to prevent losses. Thus, all harvesting operations should be performed in line with the schedule and all available human, material and financial resources should be mobilized,” the head of government remarked.

According to the prime minister, proactive, systemic, financial and organizational decisions have been made by the government to ensure effective harvesting. “In turn, local authorities, each manager and official, should effectively use these resources and mobilize personnel to fulfill immediate tasks,” Roman Golovchenko said.
