MINSK, 15 April (BelTA) – Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Rachkov told reporters about the progress in Belarus-Armenia contacts following the meeting of  Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Belarus Razmik Khumaryan, BelTA has learned.

“The ambassador has already got down to his diplomatic service. I should say, he knows the Republic of Belarus well, he previously worked in the CIS Executive Committee. The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere,” Sergei Rachkov said.

Belarus and Armenia are bonded by cordial, friendly relations, and a common history, the senator noted. “We strive to develop both political and humanitarian dialogue, i.e. communication between our peoples. We are strategic partners, we are members of a number of international organizations - the CIS, the EAEU, the CSTO. We maintain a trust-based and frank dialogue. We discuss all kinds of topics, and we share views on many issues on the international agenda,” he stressed.

According to him, in the current international situation the focus is placed on economic relations. “In recent years, the trade between the two countries has more than tripled, the target of $100 million has already been achieved. In 2021, the trade grew by 18%, the export of Belarusian goods to Armenia went up by 19%. The export to Armenia remains on the growth track this year. We actively sell dairy and woodworking products, such as butter, cardboard, paper, as well as a number of metal products. Armenia is increasing investment in Belarus. In 2021, its investment amounted to $15.5 million, which is a pretty good figure. Belarus is home to 46 joint ventures with Armenian capital. This is a very good achievement within the framework of bilateral relations and the EAEU,” Sergei Rachkov said.

The two countries maintain large-scale cooperation in the humanitarian field. “We are holding joint days of culture. We are looking forward to hosting Armenian performers soon. In addition, we have discussed tourism, because now is a good time for Belarusians and Armenians to know each other better by traveling. Armenia is promoting various areas of tourism. For example, the ambassador mentioned gastronomy tourism and extreme sports. We found common ground in the promotion of hunting tourism: when the season ends here, it begins in Armenia,” he added.

“Our peoples are similar in spirit and mentality. The Armenian diaspora has received a land plot for the construction of an Armenian church in Belarus. It is important to strengthen not only political, trade and economic relations, but also spiritual bonds - something that has been linking the two fraternal peoples for centuries,” Sergei Rachkov concluded.
