MINSK, 2 November (BelTA) – Belarus is in no need of emergency financing, Belarus’ First Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Matyushevsky told the media on the sidelines of the KEF 2017 conference “Foundations of the Future” on 2 November, BelTA has learned.

Commenting on the talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Vasily Matyushevsky stressed that getting a loan is not the most important thing. “Generally speaking, Belarus is in no need of emergency financing. The situation is balanced. We honor our debt commitments in full and on time. We do not need additional money. Cooperation with the IMF is something different. The IMF is traditionally viewed by investors and market participants as a global auditor. We need this dialogue with the IMF for them to confirm that we are moving in the right direction and there are no threats for investors. This is our major goal,” noted Vasily Matyushevsky.

In his words, Belarus maintains dialogue with the IMF. “On Friday the IMF mission is expected to publish its new report and commentaries. I think we all will see their assessment of what we have been doing in the country,” said Vasily Matyushevsky.

In his words, a new program with the IMF has just been discussed. “We still have different views on the speed of some actions. We provided our explanation: reforms for the sake of reforms are not the right thing to do. Reforms are carried out to enhance efficiency, get some results that will be supported in the society. When reforms are not popular with people, it is better not to go ahead with them. There is a saying: a discredited reform is worse than the lack of reform itself,” Vasily Matyushevsky said.
