Lukashenko sees consumer cooperatives as business hub for Belarusian-made goods

MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – Consumer cooperatives can become a kind of business hub for Belarusian-made goods, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the general meeting of the Belarusian national union of consumer societies Belkoopsoyuz in Minsk on 16 February, BelTA has learned.

The president recalled that First National Trading House was opened in Minsk at the end of 2023. Producers from all regions have their goods on sale there. The shopping mall immediately became popular with both Minsk residents and visitors to the capital. Its daily foot traffic is up to 20,000 people.

“How is Belkoopsoyuz represented there? Come and see: with furs. Hanging out fur coats and waiting is the easiest way. Where are your catering outlets? The door is open to you there. If it's not, tell me. Why is there no cafe or grocery store selling wonderful pastries, pickles, sauerkraut, draniki, lard and so on? No one knows better how to cook it all. The products are organic, high-quality, made to traditional recipes. This is just one example of how you can restoring the full-fledged presence in cities,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president noted that there are enough department stores in the country. Now there is a demand for retail that works according to a certain assortment concept, such as confectionery, meat and small wholesale outlets.

“Today you can not only develop your own trade, but also establish interaction with Belarusian producers, and become a kind of business hub for them. Goods from other manufacturers, retail platforms from you. You should be a conduit for domestic goods to the regions, especially to the hinterland. Everyone will benefit from it. However, assess the prospects carefully. If it is justified, then send out mobile stores with proper business hours on the routes. Rural communities should get a quality alternative to a regular store,” the head of state emphasized.
