MIKASHEVICHI, 5 October (BelTA) – The revival of the countryside in Belarus essentially started with the organization of the harvest festival Dazhynki. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a solemn ceremony held as part of the Dazhynki 2024 harvest festival in Mikashevichi to honor agrarians, BelTA has learned.
The head of state mentioned another very important role that the harvest festivals play. “Step by step, however hard it can be, every year we changed the capital city of the festival and changed district capitals and oblast capitals in the process. The festival became a national project,” he said.
The efforts evolved into a large-scale government program later on. Agrotowns were built as well as modern dairy complexes. “But essentially the countryside revival began with our Dazhynki festivals,” the Belarusian leader stressed. “Yes, we criticize ourselves a lot and rightly so. However, if we face the truth, we have something to be proud of.”
Aleksandr Lukashenko reminded that in the past Belarus had harvests as low as 5-6 million tonnes of grain. It was not considered a bad figure. Meanwhile, 7 million tonnes of grain was looked at as an otherworldly achievement.
“Today we have come to realize that 10 million tonnes is the norm. But you know my approach. We need only 11-12 million tonnes of grain. And that’s it. We don’t need more than that,” the head of state said. “We will cultivate other crops that we import. You see how the climate is changing.”
