Lukashenko asks scientists to put forward ideas on additional use of electricity

MINSK, 11 September (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has asked Belarusian scientists to come up with novel and innovation-based ideas on additional use of electric energy that will soon be generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA has learned.
“The nuclear power plant means a breakthrough, it is part of our sovereignty,” the head of state emphasized. He noted that the country is gradually increasing electric energy consumption among households and the economy. Incentives are in place to encourage electricity use. “We will try to boost electricity consumption in all the areas,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“We ask you to help us identify possible hidden opportunities of using this energy. We should not be shy. Put forward your ideas, your vision that will ensure our sovereignty and independence. We have really brilliant scientists who can work wonders,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The head of state emphasized that the decision to build the nuclear power plant in Belarus was right. “It was not easy for me to take the decision on the construction of the nuclear power plant, I was alone with it. Today, many agree that it was the right move. We will use it wherever we can,” the president said.
“We need to go ahead with our own discoveries and inventions. Thanks to this, we will harness the energy of peaceful atom at our first nuclear power plant. This is one of the reasons for the pressure on us. It is okay when Poland wants to build a nuclear power plant (Americans will do it for them), but it is not okay when we want to do the same. It is okay when Finland wants to build nuclear reactors, but it is not okay in our case,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
He noted that nuclear power plants are located around Belarus (several facilities in Russia and Ukraine each), however despite all this the country is experiencing pressure regarding its nuclear power plant project. “With me or without me you will see what a nuclear power plant is. This is not only the greatest achievement and cheap energy. This is utmost security for our country,” the head of state concluded.
