Georgian regions interested in trade and economic cooperation with Brest Oblast

BREST, 10 February (BelTA) – Regions of Georgia are interested in establishing trade and economic cooperation with Brest Oblast, Georgia First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Culture Alexander Kantaria said in a meeting in the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, BelTA has learned.

Priorities for regional cooperation are construction, agriculture, logistics, tourism, health and wellness tourism. "The prospects are good in almost all areas. We have a lot in common. Our fathers were together in the war, liberated Belarus together. After the collapse of the Soviet Union we have drifted apart. Now it is time to cooperate and become reliable partners. You have a lot of experience, have something to share. We are happy about your progress,” said Alexander Kantaria.

In 2015 the trade between Brest Oblast and Georgia was more than $3.1 million. Brest Oblast’s major exports are food products, furniture, household appliances, and electric batteries to Georgia. Chairman of the Brest Regional Council of Deputies Sergei Ashmyantsev noted that restoring the ties will contribute to the build up in the export/import operations.

"We are always open to business cooperation between regions. We have a small trade. Therefore we meet to extend the possibilities of cooperation. I hope that this visit will serve as an impetus to strengthening ties between the countries,” e said.

Sergei Ashmyantsev invited the representatives of Georgia to participate in the international fair Brest. Commonwealth 2016 which will be held in April. At this event, Georgian businessmen and managers can explore the economic potential of Brest Oblast, learn more about the opportunities for interaction.

The Georgian MPs are set to visit major processing companies of Brest Oblast: Santa Bremor and Savushkin Product. In the Brest Fortress the Georgian delegation will commemorate the defenders of the fatherland, will lay flowers at the Eternal Flame monument. On 11 February the Georgian MPs are planning a trip to the agro-town Belovezhsky, Kamenets District, to get familiar with the agriculture industry of the district.
