European Union to continue supporting Belarus’ work on international capital markets

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – The European Union will continue supporting Belarus’ work on international capital markets. These matters were discussed as Belarusian Finance Minister Maksim Yermolovich met with European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Gunther Oettinger, BelTA has learned.

Maksim Yermolovich said: “We are ready to discuss the entire range of cooperation. I’d like to express satisfaction with the level of cooperation with the European Union that we have secured over the last few years. We rather tightly cooperate in matters concerning the implementation of structural reforms in Belarus and operational teamwork. This cooperation is very valuable to us.”

After a pause Belarus and the European Union are fixing the relations and moving towards the level of cooperation that neighbors are supposed to enjoy, the finance minister noted.

In turn, Gunther Oettinger described the current visit as important for evaluating the current state of relations with Belarus.

The press service of the Belarusian Finance Ministry told BelTA after the meeting that the sides confirmed their readiness to preserve the existing practice of industry-specific cooperation and keep up a permanent sectoral dialogue on economy and finance within the framework of the Eastern Partnership Initiative. Support for projects designed to integrate Belarus into international capital markets and efforts to join the World Trade Organization were mentioned as priority avenues of cooperation with the European Union.

Belarus’ current excise duty policy with regard to tobacco products and medium-term plans were also mentioned. The sides discussed the development of project activities of the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
