MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) – Egypt shows interest in Belarus’ practices in the organization of radiation monitoring in the area near a nuclear power plant, Belarusian Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Andrei Kovkhuto told reporters after a meeting of the board of the ministry on 27 December, BelTA has learned.
“Egypt would like to study Belarus’ experience in monitoring radiation in the area near a nuclear power plant. We discussed the matter during the visit of Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aty to Minsk. Belarus is building a nuclear power plant. We also have installed an effective monitoring system in the Chernobyl-affected regions. So we said that our specialists can help with the organization of radiation monitoring,” Andrei Kovkhuto noted.
He said that the plans are at the stage of preliminary discussion. “Anyway, specialists of our hydrometeorology center, who have a vast experience in the field, are ready to cooperate with Egyptian colleagues,” the minister stressed.
BelTA reported earlier that Egypt has plans to build a nuclear power plant in cooperation with Russia.
An automated radiation situation monitoring system is under development at the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. Three automated units have already been set up to measure gamma ray intensity on an area of 12,000 kilometers. Another seven units will be built to monitor the situation within a 30km radius of the plant. Measurements will be taken every ten minutes.
Belarus already has automated systems monitoring the radiation situation in the areas close to the nuclear power plants located within 100km distance from the Belarusian border, including Chernobyl NPP, the Ignalina NPP, the Smolensk NPP, and the Rivne NPP.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW).
