MINSK, 21 May (BelTA)  - At the suggestion of Belarus, the EAEU will develop measures to counter the sanctions policy, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko told the media following the online meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on 21 May, BelTA has learned.

The corresponding proposal of the Belarusian head of state was supported by the leaders of other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

"You know that since 2011 Belarus has consistently made suggestions saying that if we are a union, we must respond to external challenges flexibly and, most importantly, effectively. First of all, this is the so-called sanctions confrontation. We need to wok out an appropriate toolkit in the Eurasian Economic Union," Igor Petrishenko said.

According to him, the parties would regularly revisit the relevant topic. "Today, at the suggestion of the head of our state, which was supported by all the presidents, the EEC Council together with the governments of the member states have been tasked with analyzing the situation and preparing an appropriate set of measures and proposals, which will be submitted  in due course to heads of state. They will determine how to use this toolkit," Igor Petrishenko said.

As BelTA has reported, at the EAEU online summit Aleksandr Lukashenko said that “the so-called collective West is not interested in the strengthening of our union and the strengthening of the new rival on the global market. Therefore, it is important to assess the negative impact of such external pressure and to start mulling over response measures – from the targeted promotion of import substitution and mutual trade to, if necessary, the introduction of direct restrictive measures within the competence of the union. We can use these measures like our rivals in the West do if the economic situation aggravates,” the Belarusian president said.
