Construction of Minsk Airport second runway to be launched in October

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – Construction of the second runway at Minsk National Airport will kick off in October 2016, the aviation department of the Transport Ministry of Belarus was cited as saying, BelTA informs.

The new runway is one of the state investment programs for 2016 approved by the President in late January. It envisages the allocation of Br4.5 trillion.

The second runway in the Belarusian main airport will be 60m longer than the first one and will total 3.7km. The width will remain the same – 60m. The project is estimated at $320 million.

There are different proposals for foreign investors to take part in the project. They will be considered once the architectural project is approved.

The new runway will boast lighting equipment for flights operated at night hours or in bad weather conditions. Three additional traffic control stations will be built. The second runway is due to open in 2018, after which the reconstruction of the first runway will be launched. A new international terminal will also be opened in Minsk National Airport.
