Construction of Belarusian nuclear power plant nearing completion

VIENNA, 16 September (BelTA) – The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is nearly over. Director General of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom Aleksei Likhachev made the relevant statement in his speech during the 63rd session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 16 September, BelTA has learned.

Aleksei Likhachev said: “The construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is nearing completion. We continue building energy-generating units in India, Bangladesh, Turkey, and China. Construction and installation work has begun at sites in Hungary, Finland, and Egypt. A nuclear power plant project in Uzbekistan is gaining momentum.”

In his words, Rosatom supports the IAEA’s participation in training personnel for the countries, which have decided to build the first nuclear power plant of their own.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast using a Russian design featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with the total output capacity of 2,400MW. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in late 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020. ASE Company is the general designer and general contractor in the project to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It also represents Rosatom’s engineering division.
