MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – The Belarusian Universal Commodity Exchange (BUCE) is considering the possibility of introducing a specialized trade session for the sake of selling sawn timber to the UK. The possibility was discussed as top BUCE officials met with a representative of the British company EVA Timber Group, the BUCE press service told BelTA.

The sides discussed the current state of affairs on the European sawn timber market in detail as well as the potential for exporting more Belarusian timber products. According to EVA Timber Group Director for CIS and Ukraine Aleksandr Podgaisky, Belarusian woodworking companies have good prospects on the British market, however, successful work requires a special approach.

The executive said: “Smooth deliveries, strict quality control, and understandable logistics are important for the British. Apart from that, they are accustomed to paying for the goods upon delivery while Belarusian manufacturers usually require a payment in advance. As a major importer we could take care of some of these matters and thus enhance the appeal of Belarusian goods. I believe Belarus-made sawn timber can decently compete on the British market. In turn, we will do our best to facilitate it, including through marketing and information support.”

As part of the conversation about promising cooperation avenues BUCE Chairman of the Board Aleksandr Osmolovsky stressed the strategic importance of the British market for the Belarusian woodworking industry. He expressed readiness to enable favorable conditions for EVA Timber Group’s work with BUCE.

Aleksandr Osmolovsky said: “We are interested in supplying sawn timber and other Belarus-made products to the UK. If we need to come up with specialized trade options for it similarly to those we offer to the Chinese market, we are ready to do it. Moreover, the scheme has already proved its effectiveness. The constantly growing volume of exchange trade with Chinese companies vividly demonstrates it.”

Representatives of the timber export company BellesExport of the Belarusian Forestry Ministry and the brokerage company BelForestSurveys also took part in the meeting.
