Brazil may invite Belarusian companies to join its oil production project

MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – Brazil is considering a possibility of inviting Belarusian companies to join its oil field development and oil production project, Brazil’s Ambassador to Belarus Paulo Fernando Dias Feres told the media on 5 September, BelTA has learned.
According to the ambassador, Brazil possesses big oil reserves. The country meets domestic needs in this raw material. The possibility is currently considered to extract oil onshore and in Brazil’s neighboring states. Research is underway to assess new oil and gas deposits.
“Belarus has experience and expertise of onshore oil production. Before coming to Minsk, I talked to Mr Tserkovsky [Belarus’ Ambassador to Brazil Aleksandr Tserkovsky] and he mentioned such a possibility. One of my friends is the director of the second largest oil production company in Brazil. I organized a meeting between representatives of the embassy and this company,” said the ambassador. In his words, that it is too early to talk about concrete results. “We are just in the very beginning. Time will show how this area will develop,” he added.
Brazil views further development of trade and economic relations with Belarus in the light of the Eurasian Economic Union capacities and the prospects Belarus’ accession to the World Trade Organization will provide. As for the level of mutual trade between the countries (which is about $500 million), Paulo Fernando Dias Feres assesses it positively, although his country demonstrates trade deficit. “This is not a big problem for us. We see this as an opportunity to develop cooperation,” he said. Belarus’ main exports to Brazil include potash fertilizers. Belarus purchases Embraer planes and agricultural products from Brazil.
The ambassador named the military industrial complex among the promising areas for cooperation. According to him, negotiations are currently underway to establish contacts in the area between the State Military Industrial Committee of Belarus and the Brazilian side. The difficulty is that this sector is represented by private companies in Brazil and the state cannot influence their decision. Therefore, it is necessary to establish contacts directly with each of them.
