MINSK, 13 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian automobile engineering company MAZ increased export to countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) by nearly 2.4 times in Q1 2020, BelTA has learned.

The company’s export area is rather large. MAZ trucks, passenger vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles enjoy a strong demand in many regions, including the Middle East and the Far East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The current world situation has had a considerable effect on sales of MAZ vehicles. Nevertheless, the company managed to implement a number of projects. In Q1 2020 the non-CIS export growth rate amounted to 238.2%. Shipments to several countries were resumed after a lengthy break.

In early 2020 MAZ and the Borisov-based fire-fighting equipment manufacturer OOO Pozhsnab signed a contract on delivering 73 emergency response and fire-fighting vehicles to the National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia. MAZ has started executing the contract on chassis deliveries and is assembling passenger vehicles for export to Mongolia. The joint project will be implemented this year.

Although some projects to ship buses to the European region have been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, MAZ shipped over $500,000 worth of vehicles to Lithuania and Poland in January-March.

Cooperation with African countries advances. As a result of the Belarus president’s visit to Egypt in February MAZ and the Egyptian company Helwan Machinery & Equipment signed a contract on delivering 15 vehicle assembly kits. An agreement of intent was also signed with Helwan Machinery & Equipment Company and Egynile Investment & Trade Limited on promoting joint Belarusian-Egyptian products to African markets.

The growth rate of MAZ’s export to Russia (the key market) totaled 128.4%.

In January-March 2020 MAZ was the top seller of trucks in Ukraine. As many as 125 trucks were sold. The market share was 23.58%. As for bus sales, due to the coronavirus pandemic the number of MAZ buses sold in Q1 2020 dropped by 13 vehicles in comparison with the same period of last year.
