Belarusian automaker MAZ to consider assembly enterprises in Angola, Algeria, Nigeria

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian automobile engineering company MAZ will consider the possibility of setting up assembly enterprises in Angola, Algeria, and Nigeria, BelTA learned from Anton Kozlovsky, Head of the Africa and Latin America Department of the company’s export division, on 24 August.

The executive said: “We will consider the possibility of setting up an assembly enterprise in Angola and in the future in Algeria. It may be a good idea to consider vehicle assembly in Nigeria because prohibitive duties often discourage selling fully assembled vehicles.”

Nigeria is part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). If an assembly enterprise is set up in Nigeria with localization in excess of 40%, the end products can be freely traded in other ECOWAS countries, noted the executive.

The MAZ management is intent on diversifying merchandise export. In 2017 and in H1 2018 the company sold about 700 vehicles worth over $37 million to non-CIS states. “Africa is the most promising continent for us. Providing aftersales service and warranty maintenance for our products via dealership chains in this or that region is another important task for the company,” stressed Anton Kozlovsky.
