Belarus-Russia research projects in space, stem cells to be launched in 2019

MOSCOW, 22 December (BelTA) – The Union State of Belarus and Russia is set to embark on new programs in space research and stem cells in 2019, Chairman of Belarus’ State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin said at the 55th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State in Moscow on 22 December, BelTA has learned.

The Union State MPs held “a government hour” to review progress in establishing and operating the common sci-tech space in the territory of the Union State.

According to Alexander Shumilin, the Integration-SG program is to be adopted at the nearest session of the Union State Council of Ministers. The program is designed to upgrade and harmonize the Earth remote sensing software. The program will be executed by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Russia’s state-run corporation Roscosmos.

Alexander Shumilin informed that another six concepts of priority sci-tech programs had been approved. These programs are to be scrutinized and approved by the Union State Council of Ministers. The program Stem Cells-2 provides for developing new biomedical cell products based on genome editing,”   Alexander Shumilin noted.

The Overcoming program seeks to come up with a technology to overcome antimicrobial resistance. There will also be a program to develop technical solutions to prevent natural and man-made disasters.

Chairman of the House of Representatives of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko noted at the session that it was the first time the Parliamentary Assembly worked in the format of the so-called “government hour”. In his view, this format will help strengthening interparliamentary cooperation with the governments of Belarus and Russia. Vladimir Andreichenko emphasized that this format will be used by the Union State MPs to discuss the most topical and earnest issues.
