Belarus invites India to develop roadmap for bilateral relations

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) - Belarus invites India to develop a roadmap for bilateral relations, Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Indian Ambassador to Belarus Manoj Kumar Bharti, BelTA has learned.

The Speaker noted that Belarus is interested in expanding trade, economic and other ties with India and proposed to develop a roadmap which will serve as a long-term instrument in bilateral relations. "The comprehensive plan, which was adopted earlier, actually ends in 2015. Therefore we can talk about the medium-and long-term development of trade and economic cooperation between our countries," said Mikhail Myasnikovich.

Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with Indian Ambassador to Belarus Manoj Kumar BhartiAccording to him, the roadmap should reflect the following key areas: political contacts, visits, mutual support at the international level, parliamentary contacts.

“The work on a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and India is also relevant. A year ago I initiated this work in the Eurasian Economic Commission. I think that a meeting will be held soon to discuss the approaches,” said Mikhail Myasnikovich. Moreover, we must take stock of our relations and see the bottlenecks that hinder the development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation,” Mikhail Myasnikovich noted. The Speaker considers that the traditional forms of interaction have been somewhat exhausted. Therefore he suggested discussing mutual preferences to enhance trade.

The meeting also discussed the humanitarian cooperation, and investment policy. The parties have agreed to review the agenda of the forthcoming session of the Belarusian-Indian intergovernmental commission on cooperation in economy, trade, industry, science, technology and culture due on 18-19 March, and discussed a possible official visit of the Indian President to Belarus.
