MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – Belarus hopes to supply electricity to the common electricity market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Belarus’ Energy Minister Vladimir Potupchik told the media on 20 December, BelTA has learned.
“We hope to export electricity to the common electricity market of the Eurasian Economic Union after the common gas market is established and equal rights for all the countries are created. Our electricity is more competitive that that of our partners in the EAEU,” the minister said.
As for the supply of electricity abroad, Vladimir Potupchik reminded reporters that Belarus exports electricity to Lithuania at present. He added that over the past years Belarus has provided emergency assistance to Lithuania in electricity delivery as many as 50 times. Speaking about the export prospects once the Belarusian nuclear power plant is commissioned, the minister noted that so far Lithuania’s approach to the matter has been purely political, not economic. However, after the nuclear power plant is launched and tariffs for electricity generated at the station are approved, the economic feasibility will put everything in its place, the minister believes. “Today, our electricity is absolutely competitive, and we hope this channel of electricity supplies will work,” he added.
