Belarus expects to harvest 7m tonnes of grain in 2018

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) – Belarus expects to crop about 7 million tonnes of grain in 2018, head of the crop production department of the Agriculture and Food Ministry Vasily Yadlovsky said at a press conference on 3 August, BelTA has learned.

“This year we expect to harvest about 7 million tonnes of grain including corn. We need 850,000 tonnes of grain for food purposes. The bulk, 5 million tonnes, is used as fodder supply,” said Vasily Yadlovsky.

Belarus saw a prolonged period of dry, hot weather. “This year the harvest campaign kicked off earlier than in 2017 as crops were ready ahead of time due to hot weather. With the lack of moisture, the crops did not take the necessary weight and yield. Nevertheless, the forecast harvest will meet the country’s procurement order, the demand for bread grain, and the needs of processers and the cattle-breeding sector,” said the representative of the Agriculture and Food Ministry.

“At present 627 youth crews are taking part in the harvest. Their number will continue increasing. The BRSM Youth Union awards the best young harvesters. We have launched the Youth for Harvest project. We would like to popularize all agricultural professions. We will award young agrarians and engineers,” said First Secretary of the Central Committee of the BRSM Youth Union Dmitry Voronyuk.

Chief technical labor inspector of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus Alexander Zaitsev noted that the Federation of Trade Unions takes an active part in every harvest season.
