MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – Thanks to the modernization of the energy system, Belarus has decreased energy imports threefold in 2012-2016, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko noted at the second Congress of Scientists of Belarus on 13 December, BelTA informs.
According to the head of state, the country saved up around two million tonnes of oil equivalent over the last five years. Belarus also saw a significant drop in air emissions.
The construction of a nuclear power plant has formed a new knowledge-intensive sector of the Belarusian economy, the president pointed out. “You know that some of our neighbors are concerned about the construction of the BelNPP and its safety. In this regard, a convincing scientific answer to the opponents is a world-class development, namely an automated radiation monitoring system,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
