MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – Electricity consumption in Belarus may increase up to 47 billion kWh by 2030, Belarus’ Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich said as he met with the staff of Oshmyany Electric Networks, a branch of Grodnoenergo, BelTA learned from the press service of the Energy Ministry.

“According to forecasts, by 2030 our electricity consumption is to reach 47 billion kWh, in 2020 this figure was 38 billion kWh. Thus, electricity consumption is expected to rise by 9 billion kWh,” Viktor Karankevich said.

It is expected that electricity consumption will grow in the real sector of the economy. The further electrification of the housing stock will also contribute to higher electricity consumption. Development of electric transport will be another centerpiece of efforts to increase electricity consumption.

In addition to that, electricity consumption by electric boilers will also grow. These boilers were put into operation at 20 energy facilities of the country as part of the integration of the Belarusian nuclear power plant into the national energy grid. These boilers have a total capacity is 916 MW and are used to supply heat to large settlements. It is expected that in the future these facilities will consume about 1.7 billion kWh.

The minister laid out plans to develop the energy complex, reviewed progress to implement the most important investment projects, and took stock of import substitution efforts. He emphasized that under external restrictions, energy system organizations operate steadily and remain reliable energy suppliers to consumers. Viktor Karankevich also answered questions regarding the construction of the BelNPP, radioactive waste management, and the formation of common energy markets of the Union State.
