Belarus, Africa mull over food exports, cooperation in education

MINSK, 27 June (BelTA) - The Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry spoke about the development of cooperation with African regions in an interview with BelTA.

“Along with strengthening our positions in traditional markets and increasing the share of Belarusian food there, we are working to develop new markets. The African region is a promising and important direction. We have already achieved certain results,” the ministry said.

According to the statistics, in January-April 2023 Belarusian products were supplied to such countries of Africa as Ghana, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal and Uganda. The exports include dry dairy products, by-products, beef, poultry, alcoholic beverages, and other products. Belarus imports citrus fruits, cocoa, fresh flowers, vegetables, coffee and other products from African countries.

“In order to develop trade and economic cooperation, delegations from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Egypt, Uganda and South Africa visited the international exhibition Belagro 2023, which was held at the Great Stone Industrial Park on 7-11 June 2023. The delegations visited the stands of Belarusian processing enterprises, got familiar with the list of Belarusian products, tasted the samples and discussed future areas of cooperation in agriculture,” the department said. The parties discussed not only mutual trade but also mechanization, irrigation, fertilizers, cooperation in education and science, including the training of students from African countries in Belarus.

During the visit of the Kenyan delegation to Belarus, the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment of Kenya signed a communique reflecting agreements for further cooperation in agriculture.

Zimbabwe has also become a new market for Belarus. Following bilateral visits, the parties are discussing promising areas in agriculture. In order to expand the geography of supplies, work continues to ensure access of meat and dairy products to promising markets of African countries, and the parties are exploring opportunities for signing memorandums of cooperation in agriculture.

“Of course, the current geopolitical situation has made certain adjustments and influenced the growth of delivery costs for our products to this continent. At the same time, agro-industrial enterprises are interested in further expanding the geography of exports and the development of mutually beneficial economic relations with African countries, given economic feasibility and favorable price conditions. Our enterprises are working on the possibility of supplying through alternative logistics routes,” the ministry said.
