Airport Minsk-1 to close on 1 July 2015

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) - Airport Minsk-1 will close on 1 July 2015. The site will be used to construct the Minsk Mir multipurpose compound, Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Andrei Shorets said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV channel on 8 February, BelTA has learned.

At the moment, Airport Minsk-1 provides business aviation services and operates a runway of the aircraft repair factory. “The airport will close by 1 July, but the factory will continue working and using a section of the runway for landing the planes that need to be repaired,” Andrei Shorets explained.

Many buildings and facilities will be demolished and networks moved before the construction of the Minsk Mir multipurpose compound. Andrei Shorets said that the investor already presented a conceptual construction plan and the design of the first three building clusters: what types of houses will be erected, what kinds of networks are necessary, and which buildings should be constructed in the first place. The building schedules have already been developed and will be signed next week.

Andrei Shorets also touched on another important construction project: the road interchange at the intersection of Nezavisimosti Avenue and Filimonova Street and the Gazprom office in Minsk. “We are currently working on shared financing together with Gazprom. I believe the scope of work will significantly expand in the near future,” the Minsk Mayor noted.
