Sergeyenko: Belarus views Pakistan as important partner

MINSK, 20 August (BelTA) - Belarus considers Pakistan as an important partner, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said as he met with the Pakistani parliamentary delegation headed by Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on 20 August, BelTA has learned.

“We are happy to meet you. We consider the visit of such a representative delegation as a manifestation of interest in our country, in the development of multifaceted and mutually beneficial Belarusian-Pakistani cooperation. Our meeting is taking place just a week after your national holiday - Independence Day, which the country celebrated on 14 August. Let me once again congratulate you and the people of Pakistan on this historical event,” the speaker said.

“Your country occupies a strategic position in Asia. It is the world’s fifth country in terms of population, and carries out active foreign policy activities in more than 60 global and regional international organizations. We consider Pakistan as an important partner, whose influence in the international arena keeps growing,” Igor Sergeyenko said. “This visit is also significant because this year Belarus and Pakistan are marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. This was emphasized by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko at the beginning of your meeting. Today we have felt the warm attitude of our president to your country. The evidence of this is today's meeting itself, the exchange of visits, the meetings at the highest level held in 2015-2016, as well as the contacts within the framework of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states in 2022 and 2024. I am confident that the agreements reached earlier and their reset at the current stage – discussed during your meeting with the president today - will be implemented with active participation of parliaments and will contribute to the development of comprehensive cooperation between our countries.”

The speaker expressed gratitude to the parliament of Pakistan for being among the first to ratify the memorandum on Belarus' commitments to become a member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. “Belarus and Pakistan constructively interact in the oldest international parliamentary organization and support each other in the inter-parliamentary union. Currently, Belarus is studying the issue of establishing a dialogue with the Asian Parliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The Parliament of Pakistan is represented in these organizations, and we hope that your country will support the intention of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus to join their work. We also look forward to cooperation with the Parliament of Pakistan in other international organizations. We see the formation of a fair multi-polar international system with no room for unilateral sanctions as one of the most important areas of cooperation,” Igor Sergeyenko added. “Today we have a great opportunity to discuss the prospects for the development of bilateral trade and economic cooperation, strengthening of humanitarian ties and interregional cooperation. We are ready for an open, trusting conversation.”
