Sergeyenko: Athletes’ victories contribute to Belarus’ sporting image
MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) - The victories of Belarusian athletes make a considerable contribution to the country’s sporting image, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said during a meeting with Belarusian athletes - winners and medalists of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games and the 17th Summer Paralympic Games, and their coaches, BelTA has learned.
According to the speaker, people of various professions, with different life and professional experience are elected to parliament. Athletes are represented in every convocation of the House of Representatives. The meeting was held on their initiative.
“I would like to express my sincere words of appreciation and gratitude to you for your outstanding performance and victories at the past Olympics. The event was held in a difficult international environment. We could not be represented in our usual format and number, with our national symbols. We did not perform under the Belarusian flag. The Belarusian anthem was not played when you received your deserved awards. Nevertheless, it did not prevent you from performing great, winning a total of 11 awards, seven of them gold (I mean both in the Olympicss and Paralympicss). Such great examples are a model for new athletes and for the Belarusian youth in general,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
Special words of gratitude were addressed to coaches as well. “I would like to express my deep gratitude to the people who trained you, to the coaches who are present here today. Without such renowned specialists, it would be difficult for you to show you best and win the medals you have deserved. Thanks to the people present here today, the country boasts well-established trampoline, weightlifting, athletics, and rowing traditions. All your work has not been in vain. It all contributed to the sporting image of our country,” the chairman of the House of Representatives said.
The chairman of the House of Representatives presented letters of commendation to the winners and medalists of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games, 17th Summer Paralympic Games, and also to their coaches. The participants of the meeting discussed the development of elite sports, and legislative support of sports activities.
