Rybakov: Belarus will maintain close cooperation with IAEA
MINSK, 7 March (BelTA) – Belarus will maintain close cooperation with the IAEA in the matters of nuclear safety, Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov said during the participation of the Belarusian delegation in the IAEA Board of Governors meeting in Vienna on 6-10 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“In his speech on the Nuclear Safety Review 2017, Valentin Rybakov emphasized a special role of cooperation with the IAEA in improving the country’s nuclear security infrastructure, including in the context of the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction. The deputy minister stressed that Belarus will continue maintaining its close cooperation with the agency in the issues of nuclear safety,” the ministry said.
Belarus actively uses all the necessary instruments and services which the IAEA provides to its member states. According to the ministry, the country has recently welcomed two IAEA assessment missions: the Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission in October 2016 and the Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission in January 2017.
The IRRS mission confirmed that Belarus had developed a regulatory nuclear and radiation security infrastructure and saw the country’s firm commitment to the implementation of nuclear and radiation security principles.
The SEED mission hailed Belarus for its systematic and comprehensive screening of external site-specific hazards on the basis of well-documented criteria and a comprehensive probabilistic safety assessment of both internal and external events, to be delivered by the operator to the regulator as part of licensing documentation in advance of the commercial operation of the plant.
