MINSK, 12 June (BelTA) – The United Kingdom is interested in expanding cooperation with Belarus as it is withdrawing from the European Union, Belarus Premier Sergei Rumas told reporters on 11 June following his meeting with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK Jeremy Hunt in London, BelTA has learned.
“Given the Brexit process, the United Kingdom is interested in establishing closer contacts with Belarus at the government level, because after the withdrawal from the European Union it will assume many foreign policy responsibilities that used to be handled by Brussels,” Sergei Rumas said.
Top on the agenda was development of political relations between Belarus and the UK. “In recent years the dialogue at the government level has intensified; interparliamentary contacts are also vibrant; cooperation between the defense ministries and regional authorities is also good,” the premier noted.
During his visit to the United Kingdom on 10-11 June Sergei Rumas took part in the Belarus Capital Markets Day event at London Stock Exchange and held a series of talks with British high-ranking officials and investors.
