MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an instruction to contact the World Health Organization (WHO) and invite its specialists to Belarus as he met with Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova on 31 March. Belarus president's spokesperson Natalya Eismont explained the reasons behind this decision, BelTA has learned.
“This instruction has to do with the fact that we are currently also facing the ‘information coronavirus’. We are witnessing numerous attempts to hype up the situation in the media every day and every hour. We are monitoring the media and see a lot of speculations, attempts to spread disinformation and take advantage of the situation in order to undermine people’s confidence in the authorities,” Natalya Eismont said.
“The president instructed the chairwoman of the Council of the Republic to contact the WHO without delay and invite its specialists to Belarus first of all because we want to refute all accusations and show that we have nothing to hide. The WHO will select members of the expert team itself,” the spokesperson said. “We will ask the experts to evaluate the performance of the Belarusian healthcare system in general and specifically the current situation and our methods to fight the most dangerous infections. After that the experts will publicize their findings in an open and unbiased way. We are doing this to avoid any misinterpretation in the future,” Natalya Eismont added.
