FM names priority targets for Belarusian diplomats

MINSK, 28 July (BelTA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Aleinik has named priorities in diplomatic work at a seminar with heads of Belarusian diplomatic missions, BelTA has learned.

“In the conditions of relentless Western pressure, our priorities are obvious. This is to continue geographically diversifying our work in political and economic dimensions, to counteract multifaceted pressure of Western countries, to minimize the damage caused by their sanctions, to strengthen security and promote our interests abroad relying on our allies, strategic, traditional and new partners in Eurasia and in faraway countries,” Sergei Aleinik emphasized.

According to the foreign minister, there are good cooperation prospects with the countries of the Global East and the Global South. “Our task is to make the most of these opportunities,” he said.

“Our country should not only hold out, which we have already done, not only withstand and overcome unprecedented pressure, but also develop further. As the head of state said: “Hard work makes us stronger. A strong nation is able to preserve its independence and maintain peace. “Therefore, the Year of Peace and Creation that was declared in our country has a very specific foreign policy focus. We must clearly and consistently promote a peaceful and constructive foreign policy agenda on the external contour to help protect the sovereignty and independence of our country,” the foreign minister said.

Sergei Aleinik recalled that large-scale political events will take place in Belarus next year: a new electoral cycle is beginning in accordance with the updated Constitution. The first single voting day in the history of modern Belarus is scheduled for 25 February 2024, during which deputies of the Belarusian People’s Congress and local councils of various levels will be elected. Thus, the Belarusian People’s Congress will be formed - a body that has acquired a de jure constitutional status.

In accordance with the amendments to the Electoral Code, there will be no polling stations abroad. However, this does not mean that diplomats will stay away from this most important event for Belarus, the minister emphasized. “We must conscientiously do our part of the work, which is foreign policy support and international observation. I will ask you to use all possible communication channels to convey objective information about the elections and the work of the Belarusian People’s Congress to the leadership, politicians, experts and the public of host countries,” the foreign minister said.
