MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – The Belarusian nuclear power plant meets all the environmental and radiation safety requirements, BelTA learned from Vasily Kovalenko, Deputy Head of the State Environmental Appraisal Office of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.
According to the source, the design documents for building the Belarusian nuclear power plant have been approved by state environmental experts. During design and survey work the possible environmental impact of the future nuclear power plant was evaluated. All the necessary surveys and procedures were completed. Belarus is interested in the safe and reliable operation of its nuclear power plant like no other country, stressed Vasily Kovalenko.
In his words, Belarus has chosen the most reliable design AES-2006 of the three-plus generation to build its own nuclear power plant. The design implements active and passive safeguards in addition to a double protective shell. The design matches all the safety requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build a VVER-1200 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW).
