MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei has urged Belarusians living abroad to contribute to the preservation of the country’s sovereignty and independence as he spoke at the opening of the second meeting of the Advisory Council for Belarusians Abroad at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 5 September, BelTA has learned.

“We live in a difficult time, and our common task is to do everything possible to protect our country and preserve its independence, sovereignty and statehood. I believe this is our priority task. We all should make a maximum contribution to Belarus’ growth and prosperity,” Vladimir Makei said.

The diplomat noted that different countries including Belarus are facing a range of challenges and threats, such as terrorism, migration, increase in military activity in a number of countries, and the adverse impact of the financial and economic crisis. “Our government is devising steps to prevent deterioration of the financial and economic health of our nation,” the minister emphasized.

Less than a week separates Belarus from the parliamentary elections. “This is a landmark political event. I am confident that the new parliament will do everything to promote the country’s prosperity and successful development,” Vladimir Makei noted.

During his speech, the minister outlined areas for strengthening cooperation with associations of Belarusians abroad in financing of events and promotion of cultural and educational exchanges. One of the most recent examples is the opening of the Belarusian language and literature class at a US secondary school.

"We know that the majority of associations of Belarusians living abroad need financial assistance. The national law does not allow us to provide direct financing to foreign public associations. Still, the issue is not irresolvable,” the minister stressed.

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects that Belarusians living abroad, in turn, will promote the Belarusian culture and contribute to the strengthening of Belarus’ trade and economic ties with other countries.
