Belarus supports international efforts to ban nuclear tests

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei took part in the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) in New York on 25 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“In his speech the minister voiced Belarus’ absolute support for international efforts to ban nuclear tests. At the same time he expressed concern over the accelerating trend to devalue the CTBT against the backdrop of rising tensions between the global superpowers. The progress in furthering the CTBT can be eroded because of the absence of political will and deficit of responsibility,” the ministry noted.

The participants of the conference passed a final declaration and measures to promote the entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is a multilateral treaty that bans all nuclear explosions. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996, but has not entered into force. The treaty was not signed by India, North Korea and Pakistan. Five countries (China, Egypt, Iran, Israel and the United States) signed but not ratified it.
