Belarus, Russia alarmed by NATO’s activity in Baltic states, Poland

Belarus, Russia alarmed by NATO’s activity in Baltic states, Poland

MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia are alarmed by an increase in NATO’s activity in the Baltic states and Poland. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov made the statement after negotiations with his Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei on 29 May, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Lavrov said: “We are alarmed by an increase in NATO’s activities, which we’ve been recently noticing in close proximity to our borders, primarily in the Baltic states and Poland. Our stance just like Belarus’ stance — it was once again confirmed during the meeting with President Alexander Lukashenko today — remains unchanged: such actions to unilaterally build up the military infrastructure, deploy forces and assets near our borders are destructive and undermine trust and mutual understanding.”

According to the source, Sergei Lavrov and Vladimir Makei also discussed the situation on the European continent and in the Euro-Atlantic space. “Belarus and Russia are interested in advancing equal, mutually beneficial relations with the European Union and via a dialogue with the North Atlantic Alliance,” stressed the Russian minister of foreign affairs.

Sergei Lavrov concluded: “We’ve agreed to continue working towards fixing the relations in line with the political documents adopted at the top level at the end of the Cold War.”
