MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) – Two Belarusian athletes claimed silver medals at the World Open, Sub-Junior, Junior & Master Classic Powerlifting Championships which are taking place in Minsk on 15-25 June, BelTA has learned.
On the first day of the competitions among the veterans of 60-69 years old Alexander Moiseyev (59kg) topped the chart after two exercises (barbell squats and bench press). However, in the deadlift the Belarusian was surpassed by an athlete from Iran. Bronze went Kyoji Kawakami of Japan. The Belarusian athlete is a six-time world champion and numerous medalist of the European championships.
In the over 70 group, 82-year-old Sergei Sirotko (74kg) brought another silver, finished behind 71-year-old Magomed Satiyev of Russia.
Competing at the championships in the Belarusian capital are about 900 athletes from 52 countries. Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift.
