Sabalenka, Mertens into Australian Open quarterfinal

MINSK, 15 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium reached the doubles quarterfinal at the Australian Open, BelTA has learned.

In the round of Last 16 the Belarusian-Belgian duo defeated the German-Russian tandem of Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens will face the Japanese duo of Ena Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama for a spot in the semifinal.

In the singles event Aryna Sabalenka failed to reach the quarterfinal losing to world number 11 Serena Williams of the United States. In the quarterfinal Serena Williams will face Romania’s world number 2 Simona Halep. In the other quarterfinal Japan’s world number 3 Naomi Osaka will play world number 71 Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei.

In the men’s singles event Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will take on Germany’s world number 7 Alexander Zverev for a spot in the semifinal. Russia’s world number 114 Aslan Karatsev will play Bulgaria’s world number 21 Grigor Dimitrov.
