New museum exhibition unveiled in Brest Fortress

BREST, 20 January (BelTA) - A permanent museum exhibition was opened in Fort No.5 of Brest Fortress on 19 January, BelTA has learned.

Fort No.5 has been renovated thanks to the project of the Union State of Belarus and Russia “Overhaul, restoration and museumization of the structures of Brest Fortress." The fort was closed to the public in the middle of last summer. During these six months, specialists restored the left part of the barracks, cleaned the walls and facades, replaced windows and doors, laid down engineering networks. Meanwhile, museum staff were putting up a historical exhibition.

It is safe to say that another museum has been set up in Brest Fortress. It is located in the casemates of the rear barracks. The new exhibition spans six halls. The first one details the history of fortifications on Belarusian lands. The second is dedicated to Brest Fortress in the fortification system on the western borders of the Russian Empire. The third room narrates about the modernization of the citadel over the Bug River in the early 20th century and the construction of two forts. The museum workers recreated the interiors of the residential casemate for the lower-rank military, the armory, the office of the fort and a washroom.

Part of the exhibition is locates outside the barracks extending to the rear caponir, the central pass-through and a powder cellar.

Fort. 5 is one of the best-preserved forts of Brest Fortress. It was built in 1879-1880 and has been modernized several times. The front fort of the fortress was built of brick and earth, with an earthen shaft and a water-filled moat around. At the beginning of the 20th century, all the structures of the fort were reinforced with concrete.
