MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – The 26th Minsk International Book Fair will present new names and 2018 editions, Belarus’ Information Minister Alexander Karlyukevich told reporters on 4 February, BelTA has learned.
“The exhibition will be the showcase for the national book publishing industry. Our task is to discover new books and new names and put them in the limelight using media coverage. We will also arrange discussions, presentations, and autograph signings where participants of the expo will share their views of development prospects of the domestic book publishing industry,” the minister noted.
In his words, the three-volume encyclopedia Yanka Kupala by the Petrus Brovka Belarusian Encyclopedia Publishing House is one of the key outcomes of the Belarusian book publishing industry. The work on it was completed last year. “We have prepared this three-volume edition about Yanka Kupala for the general public and researchers. It is well-timed, because our contemporaries have an interest in the works of the Belarusian classic,” Alexander Karlyukevich said.
The Petrus Brovka Belarusian Encyclopedia Publishing House will roll out encyclopedias Towns and Villages and Belarus’ Regions. A series of books Sports in Belarus will be timed to the 2nd European Games in Minsk. The Mastatskaya Litaratura publishing house will present Leaves of Grass poetry collection by the American poet Walt Whitman translated by Yanka Sipakov.
The minister noted that many books and brochures in foreign languages are published in Belarus. For example, about 600 English-language editions saw the light in 2018. The publication of the Outlook almanac was resumed. The almanac, that contains translated works, is a good testimony to the high level of Belarusian translators, Alexander Karlyukevich is convinced.
It is noteworthy that there is more to the Minsk International Book Fair than just an expo. This major book event will incorporate events at bookstores, libraries and museums, literature excursions, poetry itineraries and thematic seminars. “The Palace of Arts will present Belarusian book illustrations of recent years. We hope that this event will contribute to closer contacts between book illustrators and publishers, as we want to give a boost to such partnerships. An event dedicated to bookmarks will be held at the National History Museum. Thus, we would like to tell people about new trends in the book publishing industry. Apart from that, Vladimir Likhodedov’s project Searching For The Lost will be arranged at a separate pavilion. He will present the project and a 16th-century printing press,” the minister noted.
The 26th Minsk International Book Fair will be held under the slogan "More Than Books" at 14 Pobeditelei Avenue in Minsk from 6 to 10 February. The expo area of 3,000m2 will feature more than 300 pavilions. Representatives of 35 countries applied for the event. Some 60,000 people are expected to visit the fair. The organizers of the Minsk International Book Fair are the Information Ministry, the Minsk City Hall and the Belarusian Writers' Union. Co-organizers are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Education Ministry, the Culture Ministry, Belkniga and Makbel book selling companies.
