Journalists, bloggers plant allee of birch trees to mark Brest millennium

BREST, 12 March (BelTA) – Journalists of the regional and national media outlets and bloggers took part in the environmental campaign “A Thousand Trees for Brest Millennium” on 12 March, BelTA has learned.

The media representatives laid out an allee of birch trees in Brest Millennium Park. Journalists of printed media, online media, and television planted 48 birch trees. Several young trees were planted by Brest Mayor Alexander Rogachuk. “We aim to make Brest the ‘greenest’ city in Belarus. Instructions from the Belarusian head of state to landscape residential areas is another reason to step up this work. Utility services could do that themselves but it is important to involve as many Brest residents as possible in the campaign. Planting trees is a very satisfactory process,” the mayor said.

The campaign “A Thousand Trees for Brest Millennium” was launched in late 2018. Since then some 200 red maples, cedars, ornamental apple trees, larches, ashes, pyramidal oaks have been planted. The project is supported by business and local authorities.

Alexander Rogachuk noted that this year the planting of trees started earlier than usually, in mid February. Some 1,000 trees have already been planted. In 2019, this number will increase manifold. Young trees will be also planted within the framework of many other environmental campaigns. The city also intends to buy watering equipment.

Plans are in place to plant some 20,000 pine saplings, 6,000 trees, around 10,000 bushes in Brest in 2019. A lot of them will be planted in the city’s center and new districts, new green spaces will be set up.

“We cannot focus only on Brest Millennium Park. We want to implement an interesting solution along Partizansky Avenue to commemorate the partisans and lay out a square there. We intend to combine two projects: to put new life into the City Garden and to renovate the promenade. The projects will be funded by business entities. We hope to have  these projects completed by July,” Alexander Rogachuk noted.
