MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) – HC Shakhtyor Soligorsk, who placed second in the Belarusian Ice Hockey Championship, learned their opponents for the 2020-2021 IIHF Continental Cup on 19 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation.
The Soligorsk team will start the competition in the group stage. In Group E HC Shakhtyor will face Olimp 69 (Latvia), Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia), and also the winner of Qualifiers Group B (Crvena Zvezda Belgrade, Mladost Zagreb, Buz Beykoz Istanbul, and Irbis-Skate Sofia).
HC Shakhtyor will play in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 13-15 November 2020.
Due to the consequences of the pandemic, the format of the tournament has undergone some changes and now it will be held in three stages. Twenty teams from 20 countries will compete for the trophy. The team from Soligorsk will take part in the Continental Cup for the third time in its history. In 2016 and 2017 the team reached the third round.
Belarus was represented by HC Neman Grodno at the tournament last year. Sergei Pushkov's men placed third. The Continental Cup was won by Denmark’s SonderjyskE Ishockey.
