MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Belarusian scientists have designed an all-season lidar to study the atmosphere in Antarctic conditions, BelTA learned from Maksim Bogdanovich, Director of the B.I. Stepanov Physics Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
The official said: “This year we’ve finished the development of a container-type atmospheric lidar. It is supposed to be shipped to Antarctica at the end of the year. The device will help our scientists study the atmosphere. It will be the world’s first all-season lidar. It is a product of the Physics Institute and enjoys demand all over the world: in Russia, in China, and in European countries. We enjoy great respect in this field.” The Physics Institute is one of the initiators of the European Lidar Network, which comprises dozens of lidar stations and helps evaluate the spread of pollution in the atmosphere. Virtually every station like that uses software developed by Belarusian scientists.
Apart from that, the Physics Institute intends to open a new industrial laser technology center this year. “As for laser technologies, we are doing well in the area of laser optics healthcare. We are the CIS leader in the field and enjoy quite a reputation in the rest of the world,” the director said. “This year we’ve signed a contract with China on designing equipment to diagnose jaundice in kids and equipment for treating it. Every maternity clinic in Belarus has such a device.”
