Belarusian nuclear power plant exposition opens at IAEA headquarters

VIENNA, 17 September (BelTA) – An exposition of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) officially opened at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna during the 63rd IAEA General Conference session, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian exposition showcases the readiness of the nuclear energy infrastructure for the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The decision to build the Belarusian nuclear power plant was made in January 2008. The necessary infrastructure has been built and developed in the country for over 10 years.

The Belarusian exposition has already drawn hundreds of visitors at the Vienna International Centre (VIC). Many show interest in the construction progress and the specific features of the project.

While opening the exposition, Belarus Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk highlighted that the country is ready to share information on the status of the BelNPP construction project with all interested parties. More than 20,000 people visited the information center of the plant in Ostrovets. Numerous foreign experts come to the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction site every year.

The deputy minister said that Belarus values close cooperation with the IAEA and the opportunity to arrange the exposition at the agency. “We use every tool the IAEA has to offer to its members. Our top priorities are the BelNPP safety and transparency of the nuclear power program”, Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.

IAEA member states, the organization's Secretariat and partner organizations traditionally present expositions to highlight various aspects of nuclear science and technology at the IAEA General Conference session. This year stands have been presented by Canada, Armenia, Brazil, the UK, the USA, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, China, Pakistan, Russia, and other countries.
