MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – Nationals of 98 countries travelled to Belarus for medical care in Q1 2017, Belarus’ Deputy Healthcare Minister Vyacheslav Shilo said during a session of the ministerial expert and coordination council on tourism under the Council of Ministers on 1 June, BelTA has learned.
“The number of foreigners who sought medical treatment in Belarus went up 1.5 times from 2010 to 2016. In 2016 the export of Belarus medical services grew 3.4 times to the UK, 8.7 times to Australia, almost 3 times to the United States, and two times to Switzerland and Israel. In Q1 2017 Belarus provided medical services to representatives of 98 countries. We have doubled the export of medical services to Lithuania, Georgia, and Poland. The export of healthcare services to Australia is still on the increase,” said Vyacheslav Shilo.
According to Sports and Tourism Minister Mikhail Portnoi, health tourism is growing each year. “Belarus has so far welcomed health tourists from 128 countries. The organizations of the Healthcare Ministry provided medical services to more than 150,000 foreigners in 2016,” he said. Foreigners come to Belarus for dentistry, plastic surgery, transplantology, cardiosurgery and others medical services.
Mikhail Portnoi also talked about the development of sports tourism in the country. “The number of internaitonal sports events Belarus hosts increases every year. There were 30 of them in 2015 and 67 – in 2016. Belarus plans to host more than 80 sports events in 2017,” he noted.
Issues related to hunting, culinary, industrial and other types of tourism were discussed during the session.
