MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) – Belarus will travel to Biel to play Switzerland in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off on 15-17 September, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Tennis Federation.
The match will be held on an indoor hard court at the Swiss Tennis Arena. This new multi-purpose sport center, sitting 2,500 people, will host a Davis Cup match for the first time.
This season the Belarusian team had successful Europe/Africa Zone Group I home matches against Romania (3-2) and Austria (3-1) and got the right to compete for a place in the elite division. Switzerland fell 0-5 to the United States in the World Group first round.
The winner in the Switzerland-Belarus encounter will play in the World Group next season. The runner-up will play in Europe/Africa Zone Group I.
Belarus is currently 24th in the Davis Cup rankings, Switzerland is 6th. Belarus last played in the World Group 10 years ago. The semifinal in 2004 has been the team’s biggest achievement so far.
