Belarus to invite WHO experts to assess its health system performance

MINSK, 31 March (BelTA) – Belarus will invite the WHO experts to assess the performance of its healthcare system, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of Belarus’ National Assembly Natalya Kochanova told journalists on 31 March, BelTA has learned.

“In order to reassure Belarusian citizens that the authorities are not holding back anything and are not trying to downplay the situation, I was instructed to contact specialists of the World Health Organization and invite them to Belarus to assess the performance of our healthcare system,” Natalya Kochanova said.

She stressed that concealing information about the situation in Belarus will not benefit anyone. “We understand that we should take measures. These measures should be appropriate and correspond to the current situation in the country,” Natalya Kochanova noted.

BelTA reported earlier that WHO Special Envoy for the EU and former USSR countries Vytenis Andriukaitis noted that the Belarusian sanitary epidemiological service enables the country to fight against the coronavirus infection COVID-19 efficiently. “I want to pay tribute to my colleagues in Belarus, as there is a very high level of vaccination against influenza there. Thanks to this there is no blurred picture there, no infectious cocktail when it is difficult for medics to identify the COVID-19 infection. Belarus has kept the sanitary epidemiological system of the Soviet Union,” Vytenis Andriukaitis said in an interview to Lenta.ru.

WHO representative Dr Margaret Harris also commended Belarus’ efforts to fight the coronavirus. “I can say that you are doing well in Belarus at the early stage,” she noted. “It is important that you have enough qualified and well-trained doctors. As far as I know, all precautions are in place here, in particular, for those who work. You can test people and isolate them in hospitals. However, the most important goal is to stem the coronavirus spread. You are coping well with it,” Margaret Harris underlined.
