Belarus’ student 2nd at World Open Shogi Championship 2019

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – First-year student of the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics Anton Starikevich placed second at the World Open Shogi Championship 2019, BelTA learned from the university.

The World Open Shogi Championship 2019 took place in Bratislava on 15-18 August. “Anton Starikevich overpowered over 100 participants from Japan, the United States, France, the UK, Germany, Russia and other countries,” representatives of the university said.

The young man shared his impressions of participation in the championship, admitting that it was difficult to become one of the leaders. He added that the secret to success was not to loosen up regardless of the level of the opponent.

This year Anton Starikevich won the European Youth Shogi Championship. The Belarusian national team captained by Anton Starikevich was victorious at the world's largest online tournament World Shogi League beating Russia in the final. "The next European and world championships are due to take place in Minsk. I have high hopes regarding them,” said the young man.

Shogi, also known as Japanese chess, is a two-player strategy board game, which has become widely popular outside Japan. It was the earliest chess variant to allow captured pieces to be returned to the board.
