MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – Belarusian players have advanced to the women’s final of the Online Draughts Cup of Nations. The competitions are held under the aegis of the World Draughts Federation (FMJD), BelTA has learned.
Belarus beat Ukraine in the semifinal (6-2 and 3-5). In the final Belarus will face Mongolia.
Eleven teams took part in the women's event. They played in a round-robin system, with the six best advancing to the playoffs. The Belarusian team defeated the Netherlands in the first round and drew with Ukraine in the third. Belarus beat Latvia in the fourth round and lost to Russia in the fifth. Belarus saw off Israel in the sixth round and lost to Mongolia in the seventh. Belarus defeated China in the eighth round and Suriname – in the ninth. In the first match of the round of Last 8 Belarus drew with Latvia 4-4. In the return match the team beat their rivals 5-3. Belarus will face Latvia in the quarterfinal.
The Belarusian men’s team lost to Guinea Bissau (4-4) in the return leg of the round of Last 16 and is out of the tournament. According to the preliminary stage, Belarus goes fourth with ten points. The men's tournament determined 14 playoff participants among 29 national teams according to the Swiss system. The Belarusian athletes won five rounds and lost two.
