Belarus joins Eurasian Alliance in Pediatric Oncology

MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) – Belarus has joined the Eurasian Alliance in Pediatric Oncology (EurADO). The respective document was signed in Minsk on 13 May. The Belarusian signatories included First Deputy Healthcare Minister Dmitry Pinevich and Director of the National Research Center for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology Olga Aleinikova; the EurADO was represented by EurADO Chairman, Executive Vice President, Chair of the Global Pediatric Medicine Department at St. Jude Hospital, Director of St. Jude Global (USA) Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, BelTA has learned.

The alliance was set up to improve pediatric cancer care in the Eurasian region. “Our hospital has a research center to study cancer in pediatric patients. We have been conducting research for many years. We collaborate with specialists from Belarus and other countries in order to improve the quality of cancer care for children, enhance qualifications of doctors and nurses and raise the overall quality of nursing care,” Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo said.

Belarus’ accession to the alliance will be followed by new projects designed to improve the quality of medical care and qualifications of healthcare personnel and to expand the research in the country and in the region.

Olga Aleinikova informed that Belarus built a good cancer service for children and the country can share its best practices with other partners. The cancer survival rate stands at 74% regardless of the disease stage; in some types of cancer the survival rate is as high as 98%. The National Research Center for Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology set up a resource center, which enabled it to build up its capacity to train healthcare professionals from the CIS member states. Apart from that, the country is actively promoting palliative care – this can also be of interest to foreign partners.
About 300 new cancer cases in children are registered in Belarus every year. The figure stands at 8,000 in the Eurasian region. Early detection and molecular diagnostics that offers a high level of accuracy are discussed in Minsk at the EurADO Third Meeting on 13 May.

According to Dmitry Pinevich, it is of paramount importance to mobilize all resources to improve cancer care for children. The accession to the alliance will give Belarus access to new treatment solutions and new knowledge, which will also help optimize spending. 

Taking part in the conference are outstanding pediatric oncologists and hematologists, nurses and representatives of charities from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
